UCC Executive Director Urges Collaboration to Drive Uganda’s Digital Innovation

Must read

The 9th National Conference on Communications (NCC) kicked off with a powerful message from the Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), emphasizing the importance of local digital innovation. The conference, themed “Harnessing Digital Innovation to Power Sustainable Local Solutions for Uganda’s Development Goals,” brought together academia, industry leaders, and government representatives.

Speaking at the event, the UCC Executive Director highlighted that Uganda’s digital future depends on stronger collaboration between researchers, private sector players, and policymakers. “When you have a resilient academia, a resilient private sector, and a supportive policy environment, you know you are serving the people,” he noted.

He stressed that research must go beyond theory and deliver tangible commercial value. The private sector, he said, is key to turning ideas into practical solutions that can drive the country’s development. “The private sector has the power to do miracles,” he added.

Lightening the mood, the Executive Director shared a personal anecdote about receiving a bouquet of flowers at the event, humorously reminiscing about past Valentine’s Days, which drew laughter from the audience.

Returning to the serious message, he highlighted a significant challenge for Uganda: while ICTs are now as widely used as Coca-Cola once was globally, they are mainly consumed rather than created locally. He urged the country to shift from being consumers of imported technology to becoming innovators and creators of homegrown solutions.

The conference also showcased local innovations, which the UCC Executive Director praised as examples of Uganda’s potential to lead in digital development. He encouraged stakeholders to leverage the NCC as a platform to align research, policy, and industry initiatives.

He emphasized that collaboration is crucial for sustainable solutions. By working together, the government, academia, and private sector can address real-world problems, create jobs, and build a resilient digital ecosystem.

Participants at the NCC were reminded that ICT is no longer a luxury but an essential part of everyday life in Uganda. From schools to businesses, digital technologies now play a critical role in economic and social development.

The Executive Director’s speech served as both a call to action and a roadmap for Uganda’s digital transformation. By nurturing local innovation, supporting research, and engaging the private sector, Uganda can achieve its development goals more effectively.

Ultimately, the NCC showcased the country’s commitment to building a future where Uganda is not just a user of technology but a hub for innovative solutions that can benefit the nation and the wider region.
