A serious accident has occurred this morning at Mutukula weighbridge involving a highway police patrol vehicle and a trailer. The crash, which happened as police officers from Mutukula station were returning from their night motorized patrol, has left several officers injured, while others remain trapped in the wreckage.
According to early reports, the accident involved a patrol car with registration number UP 1294 and two trailers with registration numbers T 824 DXF and T 529 EFJ. The heavy trailers overturned and pinned the police car, leaving the officers inside fighting for their lives.
By press time, one officer, PC Waswa Alex, had already been evacuated to a nearby clinic in Mutukula town for urgent treatment. Another officer, PC Ahimbisibwe Kabode, was removed from the damaged vehicle at the scene and was awaiting evacuation. Unfortunately, CPL Obonyo Denis remained trapped in the wreckage, while the driver of the patrol car, CPL Odyek Tonny, was still stuck under the heavy trailer. Eyewitnesses fear that Tonny may have lost his life since the crash struck directly on his side of the vehicle.
Emergency teams are struggling to rescue the officers, with efforts underway to bring in a crane from EACOP to lift the trailer off the police vehicle. Ambulances, including one dispatched from Kalisizo Hospital, are also on the way to help evacuate the survivors and deliver them to medical facilities.
The accident has drawn the attention of both residents and fellow officers, who rushed to the scene to offer help. Many were left in shock as they watched the grim rescue operation unfold. Authorities have confirmed that more details will be released as the situation develops.
This tragic accident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by highway patrol officers who put their lives on the line to keep Uganda’s roads safe.
