No Politics Involved!! UCC Explains Why Point FM Was Shut Down

Must read

The recent shutdown of Point FM 105.1 in Mubende has sparked media attention, with some reports suggesting that the closure was linked to the station’s plans to host an opposition political figure. However, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has moved swiftly to clarify that such claims are entirely false. According to the UCC, the station’s suspension was strictly due to regulatory concerns, not political activity.

UCC explained that Point FM had been operating without a valid broadcasting license and had failed to address several technical and compliance issues communicated to them earlier. Among the concerns were the unauthorized relocation of transmission equipment, use of unassigned frequencies, incomplete type approval for their transmission devices, and outstanding regulatory fees. These are serious breaches of broadcasting regulations and posed risks to the integrity of the airwaves.

The Uganda Communications Commission operates under the Uganda Communications Act, Cap 106, and enforces rules without bias. UCC emphasized that no broadcaster has ever been sanctioned for hosting any political figure or party representative. All licensed media outlets are expected to adhere to technical and legal standards, ensuring safe and lawful broadcasting.

The UCC reassured the public and media practitioners that all duly nominated candidates can conduct their campaigns through regulated media, provided that national laws and electoral guidelines are followed. Compliance ensures that broadcasters can offer fair and equitable coverage to all candidates, without interference or favoritism.

In conclusion, the closure of Point FM was not politically motivated. It was a necessary step to uphold regulatory standards and maintain a safe broadcasting environment. The UCC reaffirmed its commitment to media freedom, professionalism, and a fair regulatory environment. Once Point FM addresses its outstanding obligations and meets the required standards, the commission will allow the station to resume its operations.
