President William Ruto has paid a moving tribute to the late Right Honourable Raila Amollo Odinga, describing him as a true patriot, statesman, and champion of democracy.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, President Ruto reflected on Raila’s long and distinguished service to the people of Langata Constituency, where he served as Member of Parliament for fifteen years. During this period, Raila earned a reputation for unwavering dedication to justice, democracy, and national progress.
The President noted that Raila Odinga’s contributions went far beyond his constituency. As Prime Minister of Kenya, he played a crucial role in shaping the country’s political and constitutional landscape — most notably in the passage of the 2010 Constitution, one of the most transformative moments in Kenya’s history.

Ruto announced that it is only fitting for Raila to lie in state at the August House (Parliament), the very symbol of the nation’s democracy and the place where he devoted much of his public life. The President explained that this gesture will allow the three arms of government — the Executive, Parliament, and the Judiciary — along with the people of Kenya, to pay their last respects.
“It is most fitting that he lies in state at the August House, granting the nation a solemn moment to honour, with reverence and gratitude, the life and legacy of a true patriot and statesman,” he said.
The message has since drawn widespread admiration across the country, as Kenyans mourn a man many regard as one of the founding pillars of Kenya’s modern democracy.
