Police Roll Out Major Security Plan for Kampala MP Nominations

Must read

As Kampala gears up for the nomination of Members of Parliament, the Kampala Metropolitan Police have announced strict security measures to ensure the process runs smoothly and peacefully. According to the Police Spokesperson, SSP Patrick Onyango, the force, together with its sister security agencies, will be on high alert during the entire nomination period. The joint effort aims to maintain peace, protect lives and property, and ensure the exercise follows the law and Electoral Commission guidelines.

Police have revealed that there will be a strong presence of officers and intelligence teams at all nomination centers. Their role will be to control crowds, prevent possible disruptions, and ensure that both aspirants and their supporters remain orderly. Intelligence units will also be working behind the scenes to monitor any potential threats and take quick action before problems arise. This proactive approach is meant to keep the process free from violence or unnecessary tension.

The Police have also advised candidates and their agents to cooperate with security officers throughout the exercise. Those planning to hold rallies after nominations must inform police in advance, stating the time and venue, so that proper arrangements can be made. This coordination, according to SSP Onyango, will help prevent confusion, overcrowding, and traffic disruptions in the city.

A detailed traffic plan has been released for the nomination exercise at the Electoral Commission offices in Ntinda. Candidates will access the venue through the Kyambogo traffic lights, using the Ntinda–Kyambogo junction, with a cutoff point set just after the lights. Parking will be provided at the International School near Canon Road. After nomination, each candidate will be escorted by police through Nalya to the Northern Bypass and will not be allowed to drive back into the city center.

To further reduce congestion and maintain order, police have limited the number of people each candidate can bring. Only two motor vehicles and six supporters per candidate will be allowed at the nomination venue. SSP Onyango emphasized that these guidelines are for everyone’s safety and must be respected. He encouraged the public to remain calm, cooperative, and law-abiding as Kampala hosts yet another key step in the democratic process.
