Court Delays Ruling on Mandatory Bail for NUP Activists Charged With Unlawful Drilling

Must read

The Kawempe Chief Magistrate’s Court has postponed its ruling on the mandatory bail application filed for a group of activists facing charges of “unlawful drilling.” The ruling, which had been expected today, was adjourned to 22nd December. Court officials stated that the trial magistrate was indisposed and therefore unable to deliver the long-awaited decision.

The postponement has caused frustration among the activists and their supporters, who feel that the justice system is dragging its feet. They argue that the delay leaves their comrades in an uncertain situation, despite the fact that mandatory bail is a constitutional right once the required time has passed. The legal team expressed disappointment but said they will return to court on the new date.

The activists also questioned why other groups, especially NRM youth who recently conducted public parades, have not been charged with the same offence of unlawful drilling. They claim this difference in treatment suggests that the case is more about political targeting than genuine law enforcement. Their statement emphasized that justice should be applied equally to all citizens.

Supporters have continued to gather around the courthouse, showing solidarity with those facing the charges. Many expressed concern over what they see as selective justice and increasing pressure on opposition voices. They urged the authorities to allow the law to operate fairly without bias or intimidation.

Despite the setback, the activists remained hopeful and encouraged their supporters not to lose faith. They believe that the truth will eventually come out and that the courts will have no choice but to uphold the law. Their message to the public was that patience and resilience are necessary in the struggle for justice.

As the 22nd of December approaches, all eyes will be on Kawempe Chief Magistrate’s Court. The activists insist that, just as day follows night, this chapter of delay and unfair treatment will eventually come to an end. They remain confident that justice, though delayed, will not be denied.
