Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, led a delegation of East African Community (EAC) Speakers to meet the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, in a high-level engagement aimed at strengthening regional security cooperation. The meeting highlighted the importance of close collaboration between political leaders and military chiefs in maintaining peace and stability across the region.
During the visit, Speaker Among emphasized that the UPDF and other regional armed forces play a central role in protecting borders and ensuring that citizens live in a safe and stable environment. She noted that without strong security institutions, nations cannot achieve meaningful development or regional integration.
Gen. Muhoozi welcomed the EAC Speakers, praising the initiative as a sign of unity and shared purpose among East African countries. He said that security challenges are no longer confined within national boundaries, making joint planning and cooperation more important than ever. According to him, the armed forces must continue working closely with policymakers to address emerging threats.
The discussions also touched on the growing need for coordinated efforts to combat cross-border crime, terrorism, and other security threats that destabilize communities. The delegation expressed appreciation for the UPDF’s long-standing contribution to peace missions within and outside Uganda, noting that the force is widely respected for its discipline and professionalism.
Speaker Among highlighted that this meeting was not just symbolic, but a practical step toward building stronger ties among EAC member states. She said that regular engagement between Speakers of Parliament and security leaders helps to create policies that support long-term peace, growth, and unity within the region.
Members of the EAC delegation also stressed the importance of involving parliaments in shaping security frameworks. They argued that lawmakers play a crucial role in approving budgets, passing laws, and ensuring that armed forces have the resources they need to operate effectively and responsibly.
Gen. Muhoozi used the opportunity to reaffirm the UPDF’s commitment to safeguarding Uganda’s boundaries and supporting regional peace initiatives. He assured the delegation that the army will continue to work professionally, uphold discipline, and collaborate with neighboring countries for the benefit of all citizens in East Africa.
In closing, Speaker Among thanked the CDF for his openness and commitment, saying that the meeting strengthened confidence in the UPDF’s role as a pillar of stability. She urged all EAC nations to continue building trust and unity, reminding leaders that peace is the foundation on which all development is built.
