SpyReport has formally retracted its earlier story that incorrectly claimed Makerere University had postponed its 76th Graduation Ceremony due to financial constraints. The publication acknowledges that the report was inaccurate and issued in error.
We extend our sincere and unreserved apologies to Makerere University management, graduands, parents, partners, and the general public for the misinformation and any confusion or distress it may have caused. SpyReport takes full responsibility for the mistake and reaffirms its commitment to accuracy, verification, and responsible journalism.
The facts are that Makerere University’s 76th Graduation is scheduled for February 24 to February 27, 2026, with thousands of students set to receive academic awards across various disciplines.
The confirmation was made during a press conference held on January 28, 2026, as part of preparations for the ceremony, widely referred to as #Mak76thGrad.
University management announced that a total of 8,262 graduands will be conferred with qualifications during the four-day event. These include:
185 PhD graduates
2,034 Master’s degree graduates
6,043 Bachelor’s degree graduates
Speaking at the briefing, Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe noted that while the number of doctoral graduates is commendable, it has the potential to grow even further if the Government of Uganda increases sponsorship for PhD training. He emphasized that doctoral education remains a key driver of research, innovation, and academic excellence at the institution.
The university assured the public that all preparations are progressing smoothly and that scheduled graduation activities will proceed without interruption.
SpyReport once again regrets the earlier false report and appreciates the understanding of its readers and stakeholders as it works to uphold professional media standards.
