Police have arrested eight suspected members of an aggravated robbery syndicate following an intelligence-led operation targeting criminals operating within the Kampala Metropolitan Policing area and neighbouring districts.
The arrests were made after police received credible information on July 31, 2026, indicating that the suspects were planning to carry out a series of robberies. Acting quickly on the intelligence, security officers tracked down and arrested the suspects before they could execute their alleged plans.
During the operation, police conducted searches and recovered a brand-new panga that had been hidden inside the trousers of one of the suspects. Investigators believe the weapon was intended to be used during criminal activities.
Preliminary findings show that the suspects allegedly used motorcycles to coordinate and carry out their robbery operations. Their main targets were reportedly business people who handle large amounts of money, especially mobile money operators and agent banking businesses.
Police investigations further revealed that the group has admitted involvement in a robbery that occurred on July 27, 2026, near the Kisasi Road traffic junction in Ntinda, where a victim was attacked and robbed.
During the operation, police recovered two motorcycles believed to have been used in the commission of the crimes, a brand-new panga, and Sh4 million in cash. The suspects reportedly told investigators that the money was part of the proceeds from one of the robberies.
Police are continuing with investigations to establish whether the suspects are connected to other aggravated robbery incidents reported within Kampala Metropolitan and surrounding areas. Authorities are also working to identify possible additional victims and other people who may be involved in the criminal network.
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, praised members of the public for providing information that helps security agencies prevent crime and arrest suspects.
Police have encouraged business owners, especially mobile money operators and agent banking businesses, to remain alert, avoid moving with large sums of money without proper security measures, and report any suspicious activities to authorities.
The Uganda Police Force has assured the public that intelligence-led operations will continue as part of efforts to dismantle criminal gangs and improve security across Kampala and other areas.
