Tension at Magere as Lawyer Arrested While Accessing Bobi Wine’s Home

Must read

Tension rose at Magere after lawyer Kakuru Tumusiime was arrested by police officers deployed at the residence of opposition leader Bobi Wine. The incident happened as a group of leaders and lawyers attempted to access the home, saying they wanted to meet their clients who they claim have been under illegal detention since January 15, 2026.

According to lawyer Eron Kiiza, who shared the information publicly, the team included several prominent figures. Among them were John Baptist Nambeshe, Abdu Katuntu, George Musisi, Jonathan Elotu, and others. The group says they were stopped at the gate and denied entry by police officers guarding the residence.

Police at the scene reportedly told the lawyers and leaders that they could not enter the premises without written permission from police headquarters. This demand, according to the lawyers, has no legal basis. They argue that as legal representatives, they have the right to meet and speak to their clients without unnecessary restrictions.

The situation became more dramatic when Kakuru Tumusiime was arrested during the standoff. His arrest has sparked concern among fellow lawyers and supporters, who describe the move as an attempt to intimidate legal representatives from carrying out their duties.

The group says they contacted the Inspector General of Police, Abbas Byakagaba, seeking clarification and intervention. According to the statement, the IGP advised them to speak to John Baptist Nambeshe and indicated that the officers at Magere were following orders within the police chain of command. This response has raised further questions about who exactly ordered the blockade and why.

Lawyers insist that several individuals, including Barbie Itungo Kyagulanyi, are being illegally detained at the residence. They argue that blocking access to lawyers, friends, and family members violates constitutional rights and undermines the rule of law.

The incident at Magere has once again drawn public attention to the ongoing tensions between opposition figures and security agencies. Supporters are demanding the immediate release of Counsel Kakuru and an end to what they call an illegal blockade. They are also calling on authorities to respect the rights of detainees and allow them access to their lawyers without conditions.

As the standoff continues, many Ugandans are watching closely. The events at Magere highlight deeper concerns about political freedom, human rights, and the independence of legal practice in the country.
