The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Military Police Brigade, in collaboration with the Uganda Police Force, has launched an operation aimed at restoring order on the roads of the Kampala Metropolitan Area. The initiative seeks to ensure that all motorists fully comply with traffic regulations, remove unregistered or numberless vehicles from the roads, and curb the illegal use of sirens, among other safety measures.
The operation began on Monday, 9 March 2026, and will continue as long as necessary to achieve its objectives. Authorities have clarified that these snap checkpoints are not intended to target or apprehend the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine. Instead, the focus is purely on improving road discipline, enforcing traffic laws, and preventing criminal behavior by some motorists.
Officials also noted that such enforcement measures are not new; they have been used in the past to maintain safety and order on the roads. Motorists, including riders of motorcycles, are urged to cooperate with both the Military Police and Uganda Traffic Police to ensure smooth operations and enhance safety for everyone on the roads.
