Democracy at the Doorstep!! Electoral Commission Unveils First Regional Office in Arua City

Must read

In a landmark stride toward decentralizing electoral services, Uganda’s Electoral Commission has officially opened its first-ever regional offices in Arua City, a move poised to transform service delivery and voter engagement in the West Nile region.

This bold step marks a new era in the Commission’s efforts to bring electoral services closer to the people, particularly in historically underserved regions. The Arua City office, strategically located to serve the diverse districts of West Nile will function as a hub for voter registration, civic education, electoral logistics, and stakeholder coordination.

Speaking at the launch, EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama emphasized the office’s role in streamlining operations. “We are here not just to build structures, but to build trust, accessibility, and a foundation for participatory democracy,” he said.

Historically, West Nile residents have faced challenges accessing electoral services, often traveling long distances to reach central offices. With the new regional headquarters in place, these hurdles will be significantly reduced—offering faster, more efficient services tailored to local needs.

The Arua office is the first of several planned regional centers, part of a broader EC strategy to enhance nationwide electoral preparedness. It symbolizes the Commission’s commitment to inclusivity and transparency in Uganda’s democratic process.

Local leaders and residents welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the regional presence of the Electoral Commission would increase civic engagement, particularly among youth and marginalized communities. “This office means our voices are no longer at the periphery. We are part of the national conversation,” said a community elder during the launch.

As Uganda gears up for future elections, the Arua regional office sets a powerful precedent. More than just a building, it stands as a promise—to bring democracy home to every corner of the nation.
