Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has issued a stern warning to wealthy tycoons attempting to dominate land ownership in the city. Speaking yesterday during his campaign launch, Lukwago made it clear that businessmen like Ham Kiggundu, Drake Lubega, and Kitandwe will not be allowed to control Kampala.
“I won’t accept Ham Kiggundu and other tycoons to take every land in Kampala. I will not accept to live in a city owned by a few tycoons who are just brokers working for government mafias,” Lukwago declared, emphasizing his determination to prevent land monopolization.
The Lord Mayor argued that these businessmen are not acting independently but are representing powerful government networks, which he described as “mafias.” He expressed frustration at their increasing influence in Kampala’s real estate and development sectors.
Lukwago stressed that his fight is for ordinary citizens, ensuring Kampala remains accessible and livable for everyone rather than being controlled by a small group of wealthy investors. “Never will I allow the likes of Ham Kiggundu to take full control of Kampala City,” he said.
During his campaign launch, Lukwago highlighted that his administration will implement strict regulations on land transactions to prevent exploitation. “Any attempt to monopolize land in the city will face resistance from the local government,” he warned.
His speech resonated with residents concerned about rising land prices and the concentration of property in the hands of a few tycoons. Lukwago positioned himself as a defender of the common people against corporate and government-backed interests.
As the 2026 elections draw near, Lukwago’s pledge to combat land grabbing is expected to become a central campaign theme. Citizens and political observers are closely watching to see how his promises will shape Kampala’s land policies and governance in the coming years.
