Insufficient Backing!! Mugisha Muntu’s Presidential Nomination Faces Hurdle

Must read

The Electoral Commission (EC) has raised concerns over former army chief and opposition leader Mugisha Muntu’s presidential bid ahead of next week’s nominations. Muntu, who represents the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), has submitted a list of supporters that the commission says does not meet the required threshold for a valid nomination.

Justice Simon Byabakama, chairperson of the EC, confirmed that after verifying the submitted lists, only 48 districts had the minimum number of supporters required to back Muntu’s candidacy. This falls short of the electoral rules, which demand broader nationwide support.

The verification process is part of the EC’s effort to ensure that all presidential candidates meet the legal requirements before their nominations are formally accepted. Byabakama emphasized that the rules are clear and apply to all aspirants, regardless of political background.

Muntu’s ANT team now faces the challenge of addressing the shortfall in supporter endorsements. Without the required numbers, his nomination may be rejected, potentially ending his presidential ambitions for the 2026 elections before they formally begin.

Observers say this development highlights the importance of grassroots mobilization in Uganda’s political process. Candidates, including Muntu and the ANT, must secure widespread backing across districts, not only to comply with regulations but also to demonstrate genuine national support.
