President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has been officially declared a nominated candidate for the 2026 presidential elections. The Electoral Commission confirmed that he successfully met all the requirements set out in the Presidential Elections Act.
Justice Simon Byabakama, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, made the announcement in Kampala, officially clearing Museveni to run for another term in office.
After the nomination, Museveni’s campaign team was instructed to submit a schedule of campaign meetings and media appearances. The goal is to harmonize all presidential candidates’ activities across the country and avoid clashes.
In line with the law, Museveni’s team also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Electoral Commission. This commits the team to follow the official campaign timelines and guidelines set for all candidates.
The Electoral Commission also handed over the national voters’ register in soft copy to Museveni’s official agent. This ensures that his campaign has access to voter information ahead of the upcoming election campaigns.
With this nomination, Museveni joins the list of candidates cleared to contest the presidency, marking an important milestone in Uganda’s electoral process.
Observers note that Museveni’s official nomination continues his long presence in Ugandan politics and sets the stage for a highly competitive campaign period.
The Electoral Commission emphasized that all candidates, including Museveni, must follow the legal framework and campaign guidelines to guarantee a fair and peaceful election process.
As the country prepares for the elections, political parties and independent candidates are expected to intensify their campaigns in the coming months, making the 2026 race closely watched by the public.
Museveni’s nomination officially marks the start of his campaign journey for 2026, a key moment in Uganda’s democratic calendar and an important step toward the nation’s next leadership decision.
