The Government of Uganda has introduced a new and easier way for tenants (bibanja holders) to pay their annual ground rent, also known as busuulu, and protect themselves from being unfairly evicted from their land. The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, led by Hon. Judith Nabakooba, has announced that tenants can now deposit busuulu directly into a government bank account if their landlords refuse to receive it or if the landlords cannot be found.

This is a big step in solving the problem of absentee landlords and those who refuse to accept busuulu, which has left many tenants worried about losing their land. The government account is meant to make sure that tenants have a safe and official place to pay their rent, so that no one can accuse them of failing to pay. Once the rent is paid, tenants will have proof that they have fulfilled their duty and are protected by law.
The account details were shared openly by the Ministry so that every tenant knows where to pay. The account is called “Ministry of Lands – Ground Rent (Busuulu)”, and it is in Uganda Shillings (UGX). The account number is 00120088000068. The good news is that tenants can pay into this account at any bank or even through mobile money, making it easy for everyone, whether they live in towns or rural areas.
This system is simple and clear. Tenants who deposit busuulu into this government account will receive a deposit slip, which they should keep as evidence. If a landlord who was absent or refused the rent later wants to collect their money, they can apply to the Ministry to receive it. This process makes sure that both tenants and landlords are treated fairly.
The government is determined to protect the rights of lawful and bona fide occupants. By opening this special account, they have given tenants a powerful tool to secure their land and avoid unnecessary eviction. This move shows that the government is serious about solving the long-standing problems of land ownership and ensuring peace between landlords and tenants.

In conclusion, tenants should take advantage of this opportunity. By paying their busuulu through the government account, they can stay safe, protect their homes, and enjoy the security that comes with following the law. The Ministry has even provided a clear guide on how to deposit busuulu, so no one is left behind. This is a major achievement in Uganda’s journey to protect land rights for all.
