Mark Your Calendars! Key Dates for Uganda’s 2025/2026 Elections Announced

Must read

The Electoral Commission of Uganda has officially released a revised roadmap for the 2025/2026 General Elections, and citizens are encouraged to take part in shaping the future of their country. This roadmap outlines all the major activities that will take place between July 2025 and February 2026, giving stakeholders, voters, and candidates a clear view of what to expect and when. The process begins with the nomination of candidates for various Special Interest Groups (SIGs) at the Municipality and City Division levels, including Older Persons, Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), and the Youth, set for 24th to 25th July 2025.

Following the nominations, candidates will hold campaign meetings from 28th to 29th July, and actual voting begins shortly after. Polling dates for the SIGs vary: Older Persons will vote on 30th July, PwDs on 1st August, and the Youth on 4th August 2025. Non-unionised Workers will also participate in a series of elections through conferences, starting at Sub-county level on 5th August, moving to District level on 7th August, and eventually reaching the Regional and National levels by late August.

District and City level elections for SIGs follow shortly, with nominations set for 11th–12th August, campaigns between 13th and 17th August, and voting taking place from 15th to 19th August. Meanwhile, Regional Conferences for both Non-unionised Workers and Older Persons will be held on 25th and 27th August respectively. The National Youth Council elections, which include nomination, campaigning, and polling, are scheduled between 27th and 29th August 2025.

The roadmap then shifts focus to the broader national positions. Nomination for Local Government candidates, including SIGs, will happen between 3rd and 12th September 2025. Parliamentary nominations are scheduled for 16th–17th September, while those for Presidential candidates will take place on 23rd–24th September. Once the nominations are complete, campaign periods for each level of government will begin. Presidential campaigns will run from 4th October 2025 to 12th January 2026. Parliamentary campaigns will begin on 23rd September 2025, overlapping with Local Government campaigns, which start on 13th September 2025. All campaign activities will end on 12th January 2026.

The most anticipated part of the roadmap is the actual polling period for Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Government elections. This will be conducted between 12th January and 9th February 2026. During this time, Ugandans will vote for leaders at all levels—right from Sub-county to Presidential—along with representatives for various SIGs.

The Electoral Commission is urging all stakeholders—voters, candidates, civil society groups, and political parties—to take note of these key dates and prepare accordingly. Participation is essential to ensure a smooth, fair, and inclusive electoral process. A soft copy of the complete roadmap is also available for download on the Commission’s official platform.

With this roadmap in hand, Uganda takes a bold step forward toward democratic engagement, transparency, and inclusive governance. All eyes are now on the nation as it prepares for one of its most significant civic exercises.
