President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has taken a bold stand against electoral malpractice within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party. Following serious complaints about irregularities during the recent party primaries, the President has promised firm action to protect the NRM’s integrity and legacy. He described those involved in cheating as “self-seekers” who care more about their personal ambitions than the values and sacrifices that built the party.
In a strong message to party members, Museveni said that electoral fraud is polluting the NRM and damaging its proud heritage. He pointed out that the party was founded by martyrs and heroes who gave their lives for Uganda not by people who bribe, intimidate, or manipulate the process for personal gain. He called on all loyal NRM members and other Ugandans to help stop this dangerous trend.
Museveni confirmed that security agencies have already begun investigations and arrests. So far, eight individuals have been detained for allegedly tampering with vote tallies. These suspects are from districts including Mayuge, Buyende, Kapchorwa, Pader, Oyam, Rwampara, Kareenga, and Mbarara. The President noted that other suspects are still being tracked, and more arrests could follow soon.
To ensure justice is served, Museveni has formed a special legal team made up of top lawyers to handle petitions and cases related to the malpractice. He assured party supporters that the NRM leadership is committed to addressing these issues thoroughly and restoring order. He urged members to provide any evidence they have—especially about incidents of violence, bribery, and interference with the voter registers.
In his closing remarks, the President appealed to Ugandans, especially the younger generation—referred to as the Bazzukulu—to stay true to the ideals of the NRM. He reminded them that the party’s legacy was built through courage and sacrifice, and it must be defended against corruption and dishonesty.
President Museveni’s message is clear: the NRM will not tolerate electoral misconduct. The party will be cleaned from within to protect its values, and those who break the rules will face the full force of the law.
