The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Justice Simon Byabakama, has issued a firm warning to security officers ahead of the upcoming elections. While addressing the media at the EC Headquarters, Justice Byabakama emphasized that the use of excessive force by security officers will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
He clearly stated that any officer—whether from the police, army, or other security agencies—who goes beyond their lawful duties will be held accountable according to the law. “No one is above the law,” he said. “If a security officer oversteps their boundary in executing their mandate, they will be personally responsible for their actions.”
Justice Byabakama stressed the importance of every institution and individual playing their part without interfering in the roles of others. “Police, stick to your line. UPDF, stick to your line. EC, stick to your line. And media, stick to your line,” he urged. According to him, when everyone sticks to their role and works within the law, the electoral process will be peaceful, fair, and credible.
The EC boss called on all stakeholders to respect the rule of law, reminding the public that elections are meant to express the will of the people—not to be a source of fear or violence. He concluded by encouraging cooperation and discipline, saying that unity and order are the only way to ensure successful and democratic elections.
Justice Byabakama’s strong message serves as both a reminder and a warning to all who will be involved in the election process, that the law must be followed and the rights of citizens protected.
