Kampala Police Intensify Fight Against Criminal Hideouts

Must read

The Kampala Metropolitan Police has stepped up its efforts to fight crime through a series of well-coordinated operations across different parts of the city. These operations targeted known criminal hideouts, black spots, and individuals suspected of engaging in illegal activities. The move is part of an ongoing strategy to improve safety and restore order in communities affected by rising criminal behavior.

In the Kira Road policing area, particularly in Mulimira and Kyebando, a major operation led by the Divisional Police Commander resulted in the arrest of 31 suspects. The individuals are currently being held at Kira Road Police Division, where they are undergoing screening and fingerprinting. Authorities say this process will help identify repeat offenders and support ongoing investigations.

Meanwhile, in Ntinda, a police patrol team intercepted a group of suspected criminals in Kigowa. The suspects fled upon noticing the officers, leaving behind a number of dangerous weapons and tools commonly used in housebreaking. These included pangas, hammers, iron bars, sticks, and jerrycans filled with suspected fuel. Police later arrested two suspects who were found hiding in a residential garage. Early investigations suggest that the group may have been planning arson attacks linked to a land dispute, although inquiries are still ongoing.

In another operation in Nateete, within Kanaala Zone, police arrested a suspect found with four motorcycles believed to be stolen, along with several number plates. The suspect remains in custody as authorities work to confirm ownership of the recovered items in coordination with relevant agencies.

Operations in Entebbe, specifically in Bunono and Guda, also led to the arrest of 31 suspects. These individuals are facing charges related to theft, burglary, and vandalism. They are currently awaiting court proceedings as police continue gathering evidence.

Kasangati Division saw one of the largest crackdowns, with more than 47 suspects arrested from betting centres and other known criminal hideouts in areas such as Wampewo Ward, Gayaza, and Kijabijjo. In addition, two suspects in Kijabijjo were arrested for running an illegal garage where stolen motorcycles were reportedly dismantled. Police recovered several motorcycle parts, number plates, and vandalized components from the site.

Police have raised concern over the growing trend of criminals using betting centres, unfinished buildings, and temporary structures as places to hide and plan illegal activities. Authorities say these operations will continue as they work to eliminate such threats and ensure the safety of the public.

All suspects remain in custody as investigations proceed, and those found guilty will face court action. The Kampala Metropolitan Police has emphasized its commitment to maintaining law and order and has promised even more efforts to combat crime in the region.
