Maama’s Recovery, Resistance History, and Museveni’s Call for East African Unity

Must read

President Yoweri Museveni has shared a reflective message about a recent attempt on the life of “Maama,” which he says happened on 21st March 2026. According to his statement, the incident was serious, but it did not succeed. He noted that the attempt came on a date he considers historically significant for the Resistance movement.

Museveni explained that 21st March is remembered within the Resistance as a meaningful day, linked to past victories during Uganda’s liberation struggle. He referred to the defeat of a counter-attack by forces of former Ugandan leader Idi Amin in 1979 at Rugaando, near Mbarara. He described this historical moment as a symbol of strength and survival for the movement.

In his message, Museveni said that despite the recent attack, Maama survived and is now recovering well. He credited her survival to what he called divine intervention and the support of skilled medical professionals. He expressed gratitude that her condition is improving steadily.

Museveni also reflected on Maama’s role within the family and the wider Resistance history. He said she played a key role in caring for children during the second phase of the Resistance between 1981 and 1986, a period when, according to him, she was in exile while he was involved in the bush war. He described her contribution as important and lasting.

Beyond family matters, he praised her involvement in public life and charity work, especially through UWESO. He said she has supported humanitarian efforts and also contributed to political activities in Ntungamo, alongside her religious commitments.

In his closing remarks, Museveni expressed a prayer for long life for both himself and Maama. He said he hopes to live to see the age of 100 and witness major regional progress, especially the realization of the East African Federation, which he described as a safeguard against future domination and marginalization of Africa.

He ended the message by signing it as Yoweri K. Museveni, using the title “Omugurusi- Ampa,” emphasizing his elder status and reflective tone in the statement.
