Police Crack Down on School Theft Syndicate, Recover Millions Worth of Computer Equipment in Kampala

Must read

Kampala Metropolitan Police has reported a major breakthrough in a case of theft involving computer equipment stolen from Buwambo Seed Secondary School, which falls under Matugga Police Station jurisdiction. The operation has led to the arrest of five suspects and the recovery of a large amount of suspected stolen property.

According to police, the incident happened on 18th June 2026 at around 2:00 a.m. when unknown individuals broke into the school premises. The suspects reportedly cut through the perimeter fence before forcing entry into the computer laboratory. Inside, they stole four HP server CPUs, which are valued at approximately UGX 60 million.

Investigators say the crime was carefully planned, as evidence showed coordinated movement and the possible use of a motor vehicle during the theft. After tracing leads, police impounded a vehicle with registration number UA 771EB, which is suspected to have been used in transporting the stolen equipment. This development helped investigators identify key suspects linked to the operation.

Following the initial arrests and interrogations, police gathered further intelligence that guided them to additional locations in Kampala. Acting on this information, a coordinated operation was carried out on 23rd June 2026 at E-Tower along Kampala Road.

During the operation, officers recovered a large cache of computer equipment, including 15 CPUs, 9 UPS units, and 11 HP monitors. Several other computer accessories suspected to be stolen were also found in different premises connected to the suspects. Authorities believe these recoveries are part of a wider network of stolen school property being circulated in the city.

Police confirmed that five suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue. Efforts are ongoing to identify other individuals who may be connected to the theft and to recover additional stolen items that have not yet been traced.

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, said the force remains committed to ensuring that all those involved are brought to justice and that stolen public property is fully recovered.
