South Sudan First Vice President Dr Riek Machar Arrested

Must read

JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN: The first vice president of South Sudan and the main opposition leader Dr Riek Machar has been arrested from his home.

Following reports of the detention of South Sudan’s First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar, United Nations has called on all Parties in to exercise restraint, cease hostilities, and uphold the Revitalized Peace Agreement in the best interests of their people.

The opposition spokesperson Pal Mal Deng narrates how the 20 heavily armed vehicles entered in Machar’s home and arrested him alongside his wife.

“His bodyguards were disarmed, and an arrest warrant was delivered to him under unclear charges”. Said Reath Mouch Tang an official in the opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army.

This comes after days when Dr Riek Machar petitioned the United Nations Secretary General H.E Antonio Guterres, African Union Peace and Security Council and IGAD leadership complaining about Ugandan military intervention in South Sudan.

However, Oyet Nathaniel, SPLM-IO Deputy Chairman, said in the statement that the Arrest and Detention of Dr. Riak Machar effectively brings the agreement to collapse; thus, the prospect for peace and stability in South Sudan has now been put into serious jeopardy.
