Police in Kiboga District have launched a manhunt for a secondary school teacher who allegedly assaulted a student with a hoe handle, leaving him seriously injured and requiring medical treatment.
The incident happened on July 14, 2026, at Zion Secondary School Kirinda in Kiboga District. The victim, identified as 17-year-old Ndiwalana Arafat, a Senior Two student and resident of Kyato Village in Kapeke Sub-county, is currently reported to be in stable condition as investigations continue.
According to information released by Wamala Regional Police spokesperson SSP Lilian Kigozi, the incident began when the student left his classroom at around 8:30 a.m. and went to the school gate seeking permission to leave and get some pocket money. He approached a teacher identified as Master Sserwadda Ken and requested permission to move out of the school.
The teacher reportedly noticed that the student’s shirt was not tucked in and instructed him to correct his uniform before making any request. The student complied and tucked in his shirt. However, the teacher later directed him to return to class instead of leaving the school premises.
Police say the student walked back to class but, apparently unhappy with the decision, deliberately untucked his shirt again as a sign of protest. This action is said to have angered the teacher, who allegedly picked up a hoe handle and followed the student into the classroom.
Once inside, the teacher reportedly struck the student on the back and neck with the hoe handle. During the assault, the student sustained a serious injury to his right eye and collapsed. The commotion caused alarm among fellow students, who immediately alerted other staff members.
Teachers and school staff rushed to the classroom and intervened. The injured student was given first aid to stop the bleeding before being rushed to a nearby clinic for further medical attention.
After regaining strength, the student reported the matter to Kiboga Police Station, where a case of alleged torture was registered. Police recorded statements from the victim and several witnesses as part of ongoing investigations.
Meanwhile, the accused teacher reportedly fled the school shortly after the incident and remains on the run. Police say efforts are underway to locate and arrest him so that he can answer to the allegations.
SSP Lilian Kigozi used the incident to remind teachers to remain professional when handling disciplinary issues involving learners. She noted that some students may be stubborn or intentionally provocative, but teachers must exercise restraint and avoid reacting in anger.
Police have also urged educators to follow approved disciplinary procedures and ensure that punishments administered in schools do not endanger the safety, health, or lives of students.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing as authorities continue searching for the fugitive teacher.
