Traditional Healer Arrested After Suspect Claims He Took UGX 100 Million for ‘Money Cleansing’ Ritual, Police Recovers Shs 54 Million

Police in Nansana have recovered more than UGX 54 million in suspected stolen cash and arrested four people in connection with the alleged theft of UGX 200 million from a grandmother in Lugazi. The dramatic operation, which was carried out following intelligence reports, has uncovered cash, expensive gadgets, and even a traditional healer allegedly linked to the case.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the breakthrough came in the early hours of July 16, 2026, when police received information that two men were moving suspiciously around Nansana Heights Building in Ochieng One Zone carrying a bag believed to contain a large amount of money.

Officers from Yesu Amala Police Station, under the supervision of the Nansana District Police Commander (DPC), quickly responded and arrested the two suspects. Upon searching them, police recovered UGX 35,611,500 in cash. During questioning, the suspects reportedly told investigators that the money had been entrusted to them by a man identified as Kafeero Ramathan.

The suspects then led police to Standard Rose Site Guest House, where Kafeero Ramathan was arrested. Preliminary investigations revealed that Kafeero is suspected of stealing UGX 200 million from his own grandmother, a resident of Lugazi. Police contacted the complainant and confirmed that a theft case had already been registered at Lugazi Police Station.

A search at the guest house led to the recovery of an additional UGX 18,900,000 in cash. Officers also found four brand-new smartphones, a laptop, and several newly purchased household items. Investigators believe the items may have been bought using part of the money allegedly stolen from the elderly woman.

As investigations continued, the case took an unusual turn. Kafeero allegedly told police that he had handed UGX 100 million to a traditional healer identified as Salongo Kato Nsobya from Kavumba in Wakiso District. He reportedly claimed that the money was given to the healer for a ritual intended to “cleanse” the stolen cash.

Police immediately tracked down and arrested the traditional healer before conducting a search at his home. Although officers did not recover the alleged UGX 100 million, they found UGX 120,000 in cash and a goat which investigators believe had been purchased for use in the alleged cleansing ritual.

The arrest of the traditional healer has added a surprising dimension to the case, attracting public attention and raising questions about the suspect’s claims regarding the use of traditional rituals to conceal or legitimize stolen money.

All four suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue. The recovered cash and other exhibits have been secured and are being transferred to Lugazi Police Station to assist detectives handling the theft case.

Police say investigations are ongoing as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the UGX 200 million and trace any remaining funds that may not yet have been recovered. Authorities have also urged the public to avoid getting involved in criminal activities, warning that anyone found aiding suspects could face serious legal consequences.
