ULS Demand Open Justice in Besigye Case, Cite Public Interest and Media Access

Must read

The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has petitioned the High Court Criminal Division to allow live streaming of proceedings in the case involving opposition figure Dr. Kizza Besigye, Hajji Obeid Lutale, and Captain Denis Oola, citing the need for transparency, public confidence, and access to justice.

In a letter dated July 15, 2026, addressed to the Deputy Registrar of the High Court, ULS requested that the proceedings in Criminal Case No. 335 of 2025 be broadcast through official court platforms to allow the public and media to follow the case.

The lawyers’ body said it had received complaints alleging possible judicial misconduct in the matter and concerns from journalists who claim they have faced restrictions while trying to cover the proceedings.

ULS President Isaac K. Ssemakadde, SC, said limiting public and media access to proceedings involving matters of significant public interest could undermine principles of open justice, accountability, and the public’s right to information.

The Society referred to a previous case, Uganda vs Christopher Onyum, where court proceedings were live streamed through Judiciary platforms, arguing that a similar arrangement should be considered for the Besigye, Lutale, and Oola case.

According to ULS, live streaming would promote transparency, reduce speculation, support accurate reporting, and strengthen public trust in the justice system. The Society said the move would also demonstrate Uganda’s commitment to the rule of law, access to justice, and good governance.

The ULS has expressed hope that the High Court will consider the request and allow the proceedings to be streamed as soon as possible. The case continues to attract public attention due to the political profile of the accused and the wider discussions surrounding justice and accountability in Uganda.
