As Uganda pursues its ambitious goal of building a $500 billion economy, businessman and public policy advocate Odrek Rwabwogo has raised an important question: can the country achieve such growth if people are afraid to speak their minds?
Rwabwogo argues that fear among citizens can become a major obstacle to national development. According to him, when people are afraid to express their opinions, share ideas, or point out challenges, the country loses valuable opportunities for innovation and progress. He stresses that communication is one of the foundations of a successful society. People must be able to listen to one another, exchange ideas, debate respectfully, and work together despite differences. At the same time, he calls for restraint and responsibility in public discussions, saying freedom of expression should go hand in hand with respect and constructive engagement.
According to Rwabwogo, Uganda’s journey toward becoming a stronger and more prosperous economy will require more than investments and infrastructure. It will also require a culture where citizens are encouraged to speak, leaders are willing to listen, and institutions remain open to different viewpoints. Such an environment, he believes, can unlock the full potential of the nation and inspire greater confidence among investors, entrepreneurs, and ordinary citizens alike.
