Police in Nagalama have arraigned in court Matovu Fred, a 72-year-old resident of Kasala Village, Kasawo Sub-county, Mukono District, for allegedly defiling his 15-year-old granddaughter.
According to a press statement issued on 17th July 2026 by ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy PRO of Kampala Metropolitan Police, the suspect is accused of repeatedly sexually abusing the minor between 2025 and June 2026 while she was under his guardianship.
The abuse came to light on 30th June 2026 when the victim disclosed the incidents to her teacher during a school meeting. She told the teacher that her grandfather had been sexually abusing her at home and threatening her to remain silent.
Following the disclosure, the victim was taken for medical attention and is currently undergoing psychosocial support. Police say investigations into the matter were conducted immediately after the report was made.
Matovu Fred has since been charged with Aggravated Defilement, contrary to Section 116(3) and (4)(c) of the Penal Code Act, Cap. 128. He appeared today before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Mukono to answer the charges.
Police have commended the school for creating a safe space that allowed the child to speak out.
“The Uganda Police Force urges members of the public to report all cases of child abuse immediately. Protecting children is a collective responsibility,” the statement read.
