Police in Wakiso District have recovered a suspected stolen motor vehicle and arrested three suspects following an intelligence-led operation aimed at fighting the increasing cases of motor vehicle theft in the area.
The operation started after the theft of a blue Toyota Sienta, registration number UBJ 997A, belonging to Kusiima Zuria of Gombe A Village in Wakiso District. The vehicle was reported missing, prompting police investigators to launch a search for its recovery.
Using tracking technology installed on the vehicle, investigators were able to follow its movements and trace the suspects’ activities. The first signal directed police officers to a parking yard in Matuga, where they discovered parts of a dismantled tracking device believed to have been removed by the thieves in an attempt to hide the vehicle’s location.
However, the suspects did not succeed in disabling the second tracking device that was still active. Police continued monitoring the signal until it led them to another parking yard in Magere, Kasangati, where they found and recovered the stolen Toyota Sienta.
The vehicle was recovered while still largely intact, although the suspects had already tampered with its steering system, possibly as part of preparations to alter or dismantle it before selling its parts.
During the operation, police arrested three suspects identified as Mayanja David, Sirisayi Bosco, and Ssekandi Juma. The suspects are currently being held at Wakiso Police Station as investigations continue to establish their possible involvement in the theft and identify other people connected to the crime.
Police have praised the use of tracking technology in helping recover stolen vehicles and have encouraged vehicle owners to install reliable tracking devices to improve security and increase the chances of recovery in case of theft.
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, said the operation demonstrates the importance of intelligence gathering and modern technology in combating criminal activities.
Police have also warned motor vehicle thieves that security agencies are strengthening efforts to track down criminals involved in vehicle theft and bring them to justice.
