Police in Wamala Region have arrested five suspects believed to be connected to the murder of a couple during an aggravated robbery in Myanzi Sub-county, Kassanda District.
The incident happened on July 2, 2026, when unknown assailants raided the home of Mr Lukwago in Lukira Village, Myanzi Sub-county. The attackers reportedly killed his workers, a married couple identified as the late Ssali Joseph, aged 48, and his wife Mariza Regina, before stealing an unspecified amount of money and seven bags of coffee.
The shocking incident caused fear and sadness among residents of Lukira Village, Kassanda District, and the wider Wamala Region. The community was left demanding justice as police launched investigations to identify the people behind the brutal killings.
The body of Ssali Joseph was recovered the following day by residents led by the village chairman, Kakinda Sulaiman, who immediately reported the matter to Myanzi Police Station. Six days later, on July 8, the body of his wife was also discovered in neighbouring Kyaseta Village, where it had been partially buried.
Following the discovery, police investigators began collecting evidence and following different leads from the crime scene. After weeks of investigations, detectives made a breakthrough with the arrest of a suspect from Masaka City, which later helped them trace and arrest four more suspects in Myanzi Sub-county, Kassanda District.
The suspects arrested include Nakavuma Joan, 38, a resident of Katwe in Masaka City; Kasumba Babangida, 26, a casual worker from Kalama LC1, Myanzi Parish; Nsereko Meddy, also known as Baamu Mukooki, 32, a resident of Kalama LC1; Kule Damian, 24, a farmer and boda boda rider from Kalama LC1; and Yamulemye John, also known as Doctor, 23, a casual worker from the same area.
Police have recovered several exhibits from the suspects as investigations continue. Among the items recovered are motorcycles allegedly used by the suspects to move to and from the scene of the crime.
The Wamala Regional Police leadership has assured residents that investigations into serious crimes have continued to improve through the use of both human intelligence and modern technology. Police say tools such as forensic analysis, tracking devices, CCTV footage, and canine units have strengthened their ability to identify and arrest criminal suspects.
Police have also called on members of the public to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing useful information whenever needed, saying community support remains an important part of fighting crime.
The five suspects are expected to appear before court once the Resident State Attorney in Kassanda District completes the process of sanctioning charges against them.
