President Yoweri Museveni has cleared all the nine Ministry of Finance officials who had been held as suspects in the Bank of Uganda (BoU) Sh60 billion heist case, directing security agencies to conduct a fresh investigation and identify the actual people responsible for the alleged crime.
The President has instructed the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to re-examine the matter and ensure that justice is served by pursuing the real culprits rather than individuals he described as scapegoats.
The decision comes after months of investigations and public attention surrounding the disappearance of billions of shillings from the Bank of Uganda, a case that led to several Ministry of Finance officials being questioned and treated as suspects.
According to the directive, the focus of the investigations should now shift towards uncovering the full truth behind the alleged financial loss, identifying those who planned and executed the crime, and ensuring that those responsible face legal action.
In a related development, President Museveni has reinstated the Principal Accountant General, Lawrence Ssemakula, who had been affected by the investigations. The President has reportedly granted Ssemakula a new three-year contract to continue serving in his position.
The reinstatement of Ssemakula and the clearance of the nine Finance Ministry officials mark a major turn in the controversial case, with attention now shifting to the renewed investigations by CID and the DPP.
Authorities are expected to provide further details on the new direction of the investigations and the next steps in the effort to recover any lost funds and hold accountable those found responsible.
