Police in Kassanda District have launched investigations into the suspected murder of a 33-year-old man whose body was discovered in a pit latrine at Kitagonerwa Village, Bweyongedde Parish, Kalwana Subcounty.
The deceased, identified as Mwesige Godfrey, was found dead on August 28, 2026, after his mother, Nakazibwe Faith, reported the matter at Kikandwa Police Station at about 10:50am.
According to police, Nakazibwe found the body of her son lying inside a pit latrine. The circumstances surrounding his death have raised suspicion that he could have been strangled, prompting police to open a murder investigation.
A day before the incident, Nakazibwe and her son had gone to the chairperson of Kitagonerwa Village, Sebatta Kizito, to report alleged threats to their lives. The threats reportedly involved Mukuye Badru and two other individuals.
Police said the conflict was linked to a family land dispute involving Kasaawe, another son of Nakazibwe and a brother to the deceased. Kasaawe was reportedly in custody at Kassanda Prison over allegations of threatening violence against his mother and brother.
According to the police account, Mukuye Badru, Dafiki and Turyagyenda had attempted to stand surety for Kasaawe so that he could be released on bail. However, Nakazibwe opposed the bail application, leading to a heated exchange of words and alleged threats between her, the prisoner and the people who had attempted to secure his release.
Police said the dispute reportedly centred on family land, with Kasaawe allegedly seeking to receive his share of the land and sell it to Mukuye Badru, a move that was opposed by his mother and the deceased.
After receiving the murder report, officers from Kikandwa Police Station were reinforced by the Kassanda homicide team, who visited the scene and carried out investigations. Witnesses were interviewed and statements recorded as police began piecing together the events leading to Mwesige’s death.
Police said the condition of the deceased’s body raised suspicion of strangulation. His head appeared to have been severely twisted, prompting investigators to suspect that his neck may have been deliberately twisted.
The body was taken to Kassanda Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Police said the suspects linked to the incident had not yet been arrested and were still at large by the time of the report. Investigations are continuing as officers work to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Wamala Regional Police spokesperson SSP L. Kigozi urged members of the public to use lawful and peaceful means when resolving land disputes instead of resorting to threats or violence.
Police have assured residents that officers in Kassanda, working together with the Wamala Regional Police team, will continue pursuing the suspects and ensure that anyone found responsible for Mwesige’s death is brought to justice.
