The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has been recognised for its continued support towards initiatives aimed at empowering young women and girls across the country.
UCC was honoured with a Certificate of Appreciation from the National Organising Committee of the Girl Champion Awards, led by Mr Maurice Hasa, in recognition of the Commission’s contribution to efforts that promote opportunities and empowerment for girls.
The Girl Champion Awards are organised by a coalition of Civil Society Organisations under the patronage of the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development. The awards celebrate exceptional young girls who are making meaningful and positive contributions to their communities.
According to UCC, supporting initiatives that empower girls is important in building a stronger and more inclusive future for Uganda. The Commission particularly emphasised the need to expand digital literacy among young girls, close the gender digital divide and create safer online spaces.
UCC noted that giving girls access to digital skills and opportunities can have a wider impact on their families and communities. The Commission believes that when young girls are equipped with the right knowledge and opportunities, they can grow into women who contribute significantly to national development.
The recognition comes as preparations continue for this year’s Girl Champion Awards ceremony, which is scheduled for October 10, 2026. The event will be held as part of activities commemorating the International Day of the Girl Child.
UCC said it remains committed to supporting programmes that nurture young girls and prepare them to become future leaders, innovators and community champions.
The Commission’s support for the Girl Champion Awards highlights the growing importance of digital inclusion in empowering young women and ensuring that girls have the skills and opportunities needed to participate fully in Uganda’s digital future.
