Three people have been confirmed dead following a tragic road crash along Kafumbe Mukasa Road in Kisenyi, Kampala, on Tuesday morning.
The accident happened at around 11:00 a.m. and involved a Canter truck, registration number UAX 513N. According to police, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle before it veered off its path and rammed into a stage where several boda-boda riders were parked.
The impact was devastating, with two boda-boda riders dying at the scene. Another pedestrian who sustained serious injuries during the crash was rushed for medical attention but later succumbed to the injuries, bringing the confirmed death toll to three.
The crash also left people at the busy roadside area shocked as emergency responders and police moved in to manage the scene. The circumstances that led to the driver losing control of the truck remain under investigation.
Police said the driver initially fled the scene after the crash. However, officers later managed to arrest him, and he is currently being held at Old Kampala Central Police Station as investigations continue.
Authorities are expected to establish whether speeding, mechanical failure, driver error or other factors may have contributed to the crash.
Police have once again urged motorists to exercise greater caution, especially when driving through busy and congested areas where pedestrians, boda-boda riders and other road users are often close to the road.
SP Kananura Michael, Police spokesperson for PRO/CLO Traffic, cautioned motorists to maintain controlled speeds and ensure that their vehicles are in good mechanical condition before using the roads.
The latest crash has renewed concerns about road safety in Kampala, particularly at busy sections where boda-boda stages and pedestrian activity are common. Motorists have been urged to remain alert at all times to prevent similar tragedies.
