The UPDF Military Police Brigade, working together with Uganda Traffic Police, has launched a major operation targeting numberless, unregistered and unlicensed motor vehicles across the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area and other parts of the country.
The operation, code-named Operation Tekeleza Sheria, took effect immediately on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, according to a public notice issued by the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs and the UPDF.
The security forces will also target vehicles whose number plates have been covered or deliberately made difficult to identify. The operation will include vehicles belonging to members of the security forces and government ministries, departments and agencies.
According to the UPDF, drivers found using such vehicles will be arrested and prosecuted in courts of law for violating traffic regulations. Security personnel will also be arrested if they are found breaching traffic laws, including driving without valid driving permits or licences.
The operation will further target civilian vehicles found carrying military stores and other military-related items. The UPDF specifically cited military jackets and other military paraphernalia, whether the items are openly displayed on the driver’s seat or kept elsewhere inside the vehicle.
Such vehicles will be impounded, while their drivers or owners will be arrested and subjected to legal proceedings under the UPDF Act 2025, as amended, according to the notice.
The UPDF said the crackdown is intended to enforce compliance with traffic laws and prevent the misuse of military items by civilians. The operation will be conducted in Kampala and other parts of the country as security agencies work together to identify vehicles and individuals violating the regulations.
The public has been urged to cooperate with the security agencies during the operation and ensure that their vehicles have proper registration, valid number plates and all required documentation.
The UPDF said Operation Tekeleza Sheria will continue until further notice, signalling an extended crackdown on motorists who fail to comply with traffic and other applicable laws.
