Proscovia Nabbosa Mukisa, a politician with the National Unity Platform (NUP), has been released from jail on bail. Mukisa is an aspirant for the District Woman Member of Parliament seat in Mityana. The decision to release her was made today, May 22, by the Chief Magistrate of Mityana, Obedi Mugizi, during a short court session.
The court granted her bail on a cash payment of Shs200,000. In addition, she had to bring two sureties who each signed a bond of Shs3 million, although they were not required to pay it immediately. This decision came after the state prosecution requested more time to complete investigations into her case.
Mukisa had been arrested by the police on Sunday, May 18, and was first taken to court on Monday, May 19. However, the judge did not make a ruling on her bail at that time and instead postponed the decision to Wednesday. The state prosecutor, Precious Ariyo, informed the court that investigations are still ongoing and more evidence is being collected. The next hearing has been scheduled for June 9, 2025.
“We are still gathering more evidence. The investigation is active,” Ariyo said during the court session. The court accepted the request and granted more time to the prosecution.
The courtroom was packed with Mukisa’s supporters and fellow NUP members. Many of them looked visibly relieved when the judge announced that she could go free. After being released, Mukisa spoke briefly and expressed her gratitude to everyone who had stood by her.
“I’m very grateful for all the support. I feel strong and ready to continue my mission of helping my community,” she said. She also thanked her legal team, her party, and the people of Mityana for their encouragement and solidarity during her time in custody.
NUP officials present at the courthouse criticized what they called continued harassment of opposition members. Radio Mukooze, who works as Mukisa’s political assistant, said that this case is part of a larger trend of intimidation against their candidates.
“This is just another example of how the government is targeting NUP candidates,” said Mukooze. “But we will not be scared.”
Mukisa’s lawyers said they are prepared to handle the charges once the state outlines them clearly in the next court appearance. For now, her release means she can return to her political campaign and continue engaging with the people of Mityana.
She is expected back in court on June 9, 2025, for the next step in her legal journey.
