Advocate Charged in $56,500 Fraud Targeting Retired Justice Kanyeihamba

Must read

A shocking case of theft and betrayal has rocked Uganda’s legal and judicial circles. A lawyer, Obam Andrew, has been charged with money laundering after allegedly conspiring to steal more than USD 56,500 from retired Supreme Court Judge, Prof. George Kanyeihamba. The case, which has caught public attention, highlights a disturbing breach of trust involving a person who was supposed to uphold the law.

According to investigations by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (@AntiGraft_SH) in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Obam Andrew did not act alone. He reportedly worked closely with Kaliisa David, a driver employed by Prof. Kanyeihamba. Between October 2022 and September 2024, the duo is said to have stolen cheques belonging to the respected professor and used them to fraudulently transfer funds.

The money, totaling more than $56,500, was allegedly moved into an account belonging to Loi Advocates, a law firm where Obam Andrew is the sole signatory. This link has placed Obam at the center of the scandal, raising serious questions about legal ethics and abuse of professional access.

The Anti-Corruption Court has taken the matter seriously. Obam was arraigned and formally charged with money laundering, a serious offense under Ugandan law. He has since been remanded in custody and will return to court on July 14, 2025, where he is expected to enter his plea.

The case serves as a reminder that corruption and theft can happen anywhere—even in places of trust and respect. It also underscores the importance of strong legal systems to protect victims and hold wrongdoers accountable. The nation now watches closely as justice takes its course.
