As Uganda gears up for the 2026 general elections, the Electoral Commission (EC) has come out strongly to dismiss social media claims that two prominent legislators, Lira City East MP Jimmy Akena and Oyam South MP Betty Amongi, were missing from the national voters register.
According to EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi, both MPs are duly registered and will be able to cast their votes from their chosen locations. “The Electoral Commission has seen and heard social media reports alleging and claiming that Jimmy Akena and Betty Amongi are missing on the national voters register. To the contrary, both are on the national voters register in the places and locations they elected and chose to vote from,” he said.
Mucunguzi emphasized that the Commission had reviewed the registration status of the two leaders and shared the confirmation with the concerned parties. He stressed that the public should treat the social media allegations as false. “The public should note that both Jimmy Akena and Betty Amongi are indeed on the national voters register. Therefore, social media reports that are claiming the contrary are not correct,” he added.
The EC’s clarification comes at a critical time when political activities are heating up ahead of the 2026 elections. With rumors spreading quickly online, the Commission’s reassurance is expected to calm concerns among voters and party supporters. By setting the record straight, the EC has once again underlined the importance of relying on verified information rather than unverified social media claims.
