General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, recently chaired a high-level meeting of the UPDF Joint Staff Committee. This important committee brings together the top leaders of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, including the Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Service Chiefs, Division Commanders, and Chiefs of Staff of the various UPDF branches. The meetings are held regularly, at least once a month, to discuss issues vital to the country’s security.

The recent session took place at the Special Forces Command headquarters in Entebbe. Key generals present included Lt Gen Sam Okiding, the Deputy CDF and Inspector General; Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, Commander of Land Forces; Lt Gen Charles Okidi, Air Force Commander; Lt Gen Jack Bakasumba, Chief of Joint Staff; Maj Gen David Mugisha, Commander of the SFC; and Maj Gen Richard Otto, Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security.
During the meeting, the UPDF leaders carefully assessed the current national security situation and reviewed ongoing international operations. These deployments include missions in the Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, and South Sudan. The discussions highlighted the UPDF’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability within Uganda while continuing to support regional security efforts.

The gathering reinforced the army’s focus on strategic planning, coordination among all services, and readiness to respond to both internal and external threats. By bringing together its top commanders, the UPDF ensures that it remains prepared to protect the nation and contribute to regional peace initiatives.
