Over 10 senior officials from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) have been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and are currently being held at Wandegeya, Kira Division, and Nateete Police Stations. The arrests come amid serious allegations of corruption and causing financial loss within the organization.
A forensic audit conducted by the Auditor General revealed shocking irregularities dating back to 2023. Investigators found that some officials were involved in forging gorilla tracking permits and recycling payment receipts. These fraudulent activities resulted in a massive financial loss of over UGX 9 billion in just two years, severely affecting the operations of UWA and its conservation efforts.
The detained officials are expected to be produced in court soon, where they will face charges of corruption and causing financial loss. This move highlights the government’s commitment to tackling corruption and ensuring accountability within key institutions, especially those responsible for protecting Uganda’s rich wildlife heritage.
The scandal has sent shockwaves through the conservation community and the public, raising serious concerns about the integrity of institutions tasked with protecting Uganda’s natural resources. Authorities have promised to carry out thorough investigations and recover the lost funds to prevent such incidents from happening again.
This case also serves as a warning to other government officials that corruption and mismanagement of public funds will not be tolerated. As the court proceedings unfold, the nation will be closely watching how justice is served and how Uganda’s wildlife sector can regain public trust.
