Uganda’s film industry is celebrating after Unheard, a local production, swept major awards at the Bantu Film Festival in Botswana. The film, directed by Joseph Ken Ssebagala and co-produced by Polly Kamukama, won Best Feature Film, Best Director, and Best Writer, marking a significant achievement for Uganda’s cinema on the international stage.
Unheard is one of the first films to benefit from the Content Development Support Programme (CDSP), an initiative by the Uganda Communications Commission (@UCC_Official) designed to nurture local talent by funding promising film projects. The success of the film demonstrates the impact of such support in elevating Ugandan storytelling both nationally and internationally.

Set in South-Western Uganda, Unheard tells the story of a young widow’s brave struggle against traditional norms to secure her family’s future. Its gripping narrative, strong performances, and authentic portrayal of Ugandan culture captured the attention of judges and audiences alike, earning it multiple accolades.
The triumph of Unheard is a clear signal that Uganda’s film industry is growing and gaining recognition beyond its borders. Local filmmakers are increasingly producing content that resonates with global audiences, and initiatives like the CDSP are providing the critical backing needed for these stories to shine.

With this success, filmmakers hope to inspire more Ugandan stories to reach international platforms, demonstrating that local talent, when supported, can compete and excel on a global stage.
