Court Orders Prison Authority To Allow Col Rtd Kiiza Besigye To Interact With Fellow Prisoners For Three Hours Every day

Must read

Lawyers for former presidential candidate Kizza Besigye have successfully negotiated an end to his year-long solitary confinement at Luzira Prison. Following meetings with prison officials, including Injustice Baguma and the Officer-in-Charge of Luzira, Besigye will now be allowed to spend three hours a day with other prisoners.

The relief comes after months of legal advocacy highlighting the harsh conditions Besigye faced while in isolation. His extended confinement had drawn widespread criticism from human rights groups and political activists, who described the treatment as unjust and inhumane.

In a social media post, Kizza Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, expressed both relief and continued concern for her husband’s well-being. She wrote that the persecution, humiliation, and violence inflicted on Besigye by President Yoweri Museveni “break our hearts” and reaffirmed that their fight for his freedom will continue.

Byanyima also called on supporters to remain steadfast and to keep Besigye in their prayers, emphasizing the need for him to stay strong despite the challenges he has endured. Her message highlighted the personal toll that political repression can have on families and loved ones.

Human rights observers note that while the partial easing of solitary confinement is a positive development, it does not fully address broader concerns about political freedom and prisoner treatment in Uganda. Advocates are urging the government to take further steps to ensure fair treatment for all prisoners, regardless of their political affiliation.

The decision allows Besigye to engage with other inmates for limited periods each day, providing a much-needed reprieve from complete isolation. While still under strict prison regulations, this change is seen as a step toward improving his mental and emotional well-being.

Legal experts involved in the case have described the negotiation as a significant victory for human rights advocacy within Uganda. They hope that the development sets a precedent for better treatment of political prisoners in the country.

The situation continues to draw national and international attention, as supporters of Kizza Besigye call for broader reforms to prevent political persecution and ensure the rights of all citizens are respected. The easing of his confinement is being closely watched as a potential turning point in the ongoing struggle for justice in Uganda.
