The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) is taking a strong step towards a greener future by examining the environmental impact of the country’s telecommunications sector. The UCC’s ICT & Research Department recently convened a validation workshop to evaluate the carbon and energy footprint of Uganda’s telecom networks. The workshop brought together key stakeholders to review and refine the findings of a study conducted by a consultancy team from CEDAT–Makerere University, led by Dr. Abubaker Wasswa (PhD).
The study assessed the sector-wide energy consumption of telecom networks, data centers, and supporting infrastructure, highlighting the environmental consequences, particularly carbon emissions. With Uganda’s communications networks rapidly expanding, the findings provide crucial insights into how this growth affects the environment. Stakeholders at the workshop discussed practical ways to address these challenges, ensuring that the sector develops sustainably.
The outcomes of this study will serve as a strong evidence base for UCC to guide future regulatory interventions. By understanding the energy demands and carbon emissions of the telecom sector, UCC aims to promote environmentally responsible practices, support sustainable sector growth, and encourage the adoption of green technologies. This initiative signals Uganda’s commitment to building a modern communications infrastructure that balances technological advancement with environmental responsibility.
