Gen Sande developed breathing complications on his way to attend a colleague’s funeral service at Nakasero, says Col Chris Magezi. This tragic incident occurred early this morning at around 3:45 a.m. in Mpigi District, sending shockwaves through the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the entire nation.
Major General Deus Sande, the UPDF Armored Division Commander based in Masaka, was traveling to Kampala to attend the funeral service of his comrade, Major General Francis Takirwa. The service was scheduled to take place at All Saints Cathedral in Nakasero. Major General Takirwa had passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2026, and his death had already plunged the UPDF family into mourning.
According to Col Chris Magezi, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information, Major General Sande suddenly developed serious breathing complications along the way. He was quickly rushed to a hospital facility in Mpigi, where medical personnel made efforts to save his life. Unfortunately, despite their attempts to resuscitate him, he passed away shortly after arrival.
Col Magezi further noted that the exact cause of Major General Sande’s death will be established later after necessary medical procedures are completed. This sudden loss has deepened the pain within the UPDF, as it comes at a time when the force was already grieving the death of another senior officer.
Major General Deus Sande was a highly respected and experienced officer who served the country with dedication and discipline. As the Armored Division Commander, he played a critical role in strengthening the UPDF’s operational capacity and guiding officers under his command. His leadership and commitment earned him admiration across the military ranks.
The UPDF has extended heartfelt condolences to Major General Sande’s family, relatives, friends, and colleagues. As the nation mourns, this double tragedy stands as a painful reminder of the fragility of life, even for those who dedicate themselves to serving their country. The UPDF and Ugandans at large continue to pray for comfort for the bereaved families. May his soul rest in peace (MHSRIP).
