Police have recovered an abandoned AK-47 rifle and ammunition from a dilapidated building that was being demolished in Kijabijo Cell, Kimwanyi Ward, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District.The firearm was discovered on 22 August 2026 after police received information about a suspected abandoned weapon inside the old building. Officers from Kasangati Police Station responded quickly to the alert and recovered the rifle together with some rounds of ammunition.
Preliminary information indicates that the building had previously been occupied by individuals believed to have been involved in criminal activities. One of the former occupants was reportedly arrested in connection with the shooting of a mobile money attendant in Ntinda in 2024.Police said the recovered AK-47 rifle and ammunition have been secured and will undergo further examination as investigations continue.
Authorities are working to establish who owned the firearm, how it ended up at the premises, and whether other people may be connected to the matter.The discovery has raised concerns over the possibility that abandoned buildings could be used to hide illegal weapons.
