Tension and shock gripped residents of Ntunda Town Council in Kyankwanzi District after an angry mob lynched a man who had been arrested as a suspect in a double murder case. The suspect, identified as Senkula Amon, had been in police custody following his arrest in connection with the killing of Sentongo Awali and his wife, Ayebare Doreen.
According to police reports from Ntunda, the suspect was arrested early in the morning and later confessed to murdering the couple on 14th February 2026. As part of ongoing investigations, police officers led by the District Police Commander (DPC) of Kyankwanzi, together with detectives and guards, escorted the suspect to Bakulimya village in Ndairinga Ward, Ntunda Sub-county. The purpose of the visit was to recover the weapon he allegedly used in committing the crime, which he claimed to have hidden in a nearby forest.
At around 3:00pm, while the police team was still at the scene, a large and angry crowd from Ntunda town and surrounding areas suddenly stormed the area. The mob, armed with pangas, sticks, clubs, stones, bricks, and spears, overwhelmed the police officers. In the chaos that followed, the suspect was attacked and killed on the spot.
The mob fled immediately after carrying out the act, leaving police officers shocked and unable to save the suspect. The situation quickly turned from an investigation scene into a tragic incident of mob justice.
Police authorities in the Uganda Police Force have strongly condemned the act, describing it as regrettable and unlawful. They emphasized that their intention had been to ensure the suspect faced prosecution in court according to the law. By taking the law into their own hands, the mob denied the victims’ families and the wider community the chance to see justice served through the proper legal process.
Investigations into the mob attack have since been launched to identify and arrest those responsible for the lynching. Authorities are urging members of the public to remain calm and allow the justice system to handle criminal matters.
This incident has once again raised concerns about mob justice in communities. While emotions may run high in cases involving serious crimes, law enforcement officials stress that violence only creates more tragedy and undermines the rule of law.
