On Saturday, 21st February 2026, a major step forward for healthcare in Uganda was celebrated with the launch of a fundraising drive to establish the country’s first Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Centre. The event, held in Lubowa and hosted by the Joint Clinical Research Centre, marks a significant milestone in making life-saving treatment accessible within the country. The new centre aims to provide advanced care for serious conditions such as sickle cell disease and blood cancers, reducing the financial and emotional burden of seeking treatment abroad.

Representing the Uganda Communications Commission at the launch, Jules Mweheire delivered the commission’s corporate contribution of USD 10,000 towards the initiative. This generous donation highlights UCC’s commitment to supporting national health priorities and improving the wellbeing of Ugandans.

The fundraising drive brings together government bodies, health organizations, and the private sector, all working to ensure that advanced medical care becomes available locally. Organizers emphasized that the establishment of the BMT Centre will not only save lives but also build local expertise and reduce reliance on expensive overseas medical services. Stakeholders at the event expressed optimism that this initiative will inspire further collaborations and investments in Uganda’s healthcare system, bringing hope to countless patients and families.
