Police in Kisoro District, working together with the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, have arrested two local leaders over allegations of corruption and abuse of office.
The suspects have been identified as Hakizimana Amos, 45, an LC5 Councillor for Mulora Sub-county and Speaker of Kisoro District, and Mfitumukiza John, 35, an LC5 Councillor representing Nyarusiza Sub-county.
According to police, the two leaders allegedly abused their positions by soliciting bribes from people seeking jobs in Kisoro District in 2025.
Hakizimana is a resident of Kamonyi Cell in Kamonyi Ward, Kisoro Municipality, while Mfitumukiza is a resident of Zindiro Cell, also in Kamonyi Ward, Kisoro Municipality.
The two suspects are currently being held at Kisoro Central Police Station as investigations continue. Police said further inquiries will be conducted to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged bribery and determine whether additional action should be taken.
The arrests come as authorities continue to step up efforts to fight corruption and abuse of office among public officials. Police have urged leaders entrusted with public responsibilities to follow the law and ensure transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.
Police have also encouraged members of the public with information about corruption or abuse of office to report such cases to the police, the Inspectorate of Government or the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.

The police said the fight against corruption remains a priority and warned public officials against using their positions to exploit members of the public.
The allegations against the two councillors have not yet been proved in court, and they remain suspects as investigations continue.
