Former Butaleja District LCV Chairman Higenyi Micheal Bory has been remanded to prison after being charged with obtaining money by false pretences in connection with an alleged job recruitment scam.
Higenyi was arraigned before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Butaleja on Thursday morning by the Anti-Corruption Coalition in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
Prosecution alleges that between 2021 and January 2026, while serving as the LCV Chairperson of Butaleja District, Higenyi used district recruitment exercises to allegedly obtain millions of shillings from several job applicants.
According to the allegations, Higenyi reportedly promised the applicants that he would help them secure jobs within Butaleja District Local Government in exchange for money. However, investigators say the promises were false.
The alleged scheme is said to have occurred during different recruitment exercises conducted by the district over the period.
After appearing in court, Higenyi was remanded until September 1, 2026, when he is expected to return to court as investigations and the legal process continue.
The case follows a joint investigation by anti-corruption authorities, CID and the ODPP into allegations of abuse of office and fraudulent collection of money from people seeking employment.
The authorities have continued to warn members of the public against paying money to individuals who claim they can secure government jobs, noting that recruitment into public service should follow established procedures.
Higenyi will remain in custody until his next court appearance, while the prosecution prepares to proceed with the case.
