Police in Kasangati have arrested a police officer attached to the Child and Family Protection Unit (CFPU) over what authorities have described as scandalous and unprofessional behaviour on social media.
The officer, identified as Corporal Mukolerwa Fatina, was arrested after a TikTok video in which she allegedly made accusations against her commanders over the release on bond of Arinaitwe Sylvia, a woman who had been arrested in connection with a domestic violence case dating back to 2023 and registered under CRB 70/2024.
According to police, Sylvia was arrested in connection with the case, but a scuffle reportedly broke out between her and the arresting officer during the arrest. The situation allegedly continued after the two reached the police station, where other officers had to intervene and restrain the officer.
Police said further circumstances emerged during the incident, including concerns about children who had been left outside the residence and were reportedly unattended at the time of the arrest. Sylvia also reportedly claimed that her husband, who is the complainant in the case, was using the situation to remove her and the children from their marital home and sell the property.
In light of these circumstances, police said Sylvia was released on bond to allow her to take care of the children while the case continues through the proper legal process. Police emphasised that the decision was made after considering the circumstances surrounding the case.
However, the circumstances surrounding Sylvia’s arrest and the conduct of the officers involved remain under investigation. Police said appropriate action will be taken once the investigations establish what exactly happened.
Police also warned its officers against using social media platforms to raise complaints or make accusations against their commanders and colleagues. According to the force, there are established administrative and professional channels where officers can raise concerns and challenge decisions made by their superiors.
The police leadership said Corporal Mukolerwa’s conduct in the viral TikTok video was considered inappropriate and unprofessional, leading to her arrest over allegations of scandalous behaviour.
Members of the public have been urged not to rush to conclusions based on videos circulating on social media. Police said investigations are still ongoing and called on the public to allow the authorities to establish the facts before making judgments about the incident.
